► (1811-72) Poeta, novelista y crítico francés. Pertenece a la segunda generación de escritores románticos. Su mejor obra poética es Esmaltes y camafeos. De su obra en prosa destacan las novelas La señorita de Maupin, 1835 y La novela de la momia (1858); el pintoresco Viaje a España y Las grotescas, crítica.

Poeta, novelista, crítico y periodista francés. La mayor parte de su vida transcurrió en París, donde inicialmente estudió pintura. Insistió en la soberanía de la belleza en obras como la novela Mademoiselle de Maupin [La señorita Maupin] (1835). Desarrolló una técnica poética para registrar exactamente sus impresiones de las obras de arte, como se observa en los poemas formalmente perfectos de Émaux et camées [Esmaltes y camafeos] (1852). Los viajes inspiraron parte de su mejor poesía, en España (1845), y su prosa más lograda, en Viaje a España (1845). Escribió también abundante crítica de arte y teatro. Su obra inspiró a poetas como Charles Baudelaire quien le dedicó las Flores del Mal, y su prodigiosa y variada producción influyó por décadas las sensibilidades literarias.
